This is a Call to Action for a
Non-Hierarchical Occupation of Monsanto Everywhere

Whether you like it or not, chances are Monsanto contaminated the food you ate today with chemicals and unlabeled GMOs. Monsanto controls much of the world's food supply at the expense of food democracy worldwide. This site is dedicated to empowering citizens of the world to take action against Monsanto & it's enablers like the FDA, USDA, EPA, GMA, BIO, and the processed food companies that use Monsanto's products.

INCIDENT REPORT: McDonald’s Genetically Engineered Menu. I’m Not Lovin’ It!

Posted: July 23rd, 2012 | Filed under: Incident Reports | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

On July 17th, 2012, The Food Supply Rescue Coalition visited an Atlanta area McDonald’s to try and buy a meal that did not contain Genetically Engineered products. They didn’t have much luck, but they did buy a meal to see if, and how long, the elements of the meal would decompose. This is part of the lead up to the September global week of action against Monsanto. Monsanto has patented their genetically engineered plants and animal feed found in 90% of American food products, and McDonald’s is one of the main conduits for these products to enter the population. But now some people are fighting back by demanding labeling, more education of what they call “Frankenfoods”, and eventually banning GMO’s altogether.

INCIDENT REPORT: Trader Joe’s Hostile to CA Right To Know Signature Gatherers

Posted: July 16th, 2012 | Filed under: Incident Reports | Tags: , , , , , , , , |

We were sent this Incident Report by Jeanne Blackwell from California. She loves Trader Joe’s and even wrote a letter called “I love Trader Joe’s” but like thousands of TJ’s customers, she wants proof that their products do not contain genetically engineered ingredients.

Below she explains that TJ’s was hostile toward signature gatherers for the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act ballot initiative:

I was the San Luis Obispo county volunteer signature gather coordinator here in California. Our job was to gather 527,000 statewide signatures for the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act ballot initiative. We did it and with flying colors — we collected almost a million signatures statewide. In San Luis Obispo county we collected 8,000 signatures in less than a month.

Trader Joe’s was particularly ugly about allowing our signature gatherers in front of their store. They went so far as to put a sign in front whenever we were there. The employees harassed and belittled an 83-year-old volunteer by shouting in his face “You are not welcomed here.” I really tried to talk to our local managers and then I contacted the corporate office. Local managers were downright hostile and corporate never responded. I wrote a letter and sent it out to the label GMO campaign and local media.

When I saw that they carry GMO products like Barbara’s Go Lean I asked them to explain. They said more than once, and as a recently as last week, “Our store brands are NOT GMOs.” I followed up by asking about their Trader Joe corn tortillas. They assured me the corn was NOT GMO.

I would very much like to expose Trader Joe’s. I am pissed. The store does an extraordinary business and is built on the principle that their products are safe and non-GMO. People are trying to do the right thing and be responsible shoppers. They trust TJ’s. If TJ’s is lying there is going to be hell to pay.

Perhaps Trader Joe’s is so hostile because some of the food they sell contains genetically engineered ingredients. That’s why we plan to go Shopping for Truth at Trader Joe’s during the last weekend of July.

Whole Foods Rejects Dialog on GMO Safety

Drivers passing by the Brentwood, Missouri Whole Foods Market (WFM) on June 9 spied a 14 foot tall coyote puppet. Next to the puppet was a sign reading “Coyote Jim Says” followed by “GMOs Contaminate Food” and “Whole Foods Sells GMOs.”

Twenty members of the Gateway Green Alliance (GGA) and Safe Food Action St. Louis (SFA), along with Occupy St. Louis supporters were reminding customers that higher prices at WFM do not necessarily buy better food. The action followed the refusal of WFM to discuss the safety of food it sells which contains GMOs (genetically modified organisms).

Many of the customers who stopped to talk were aware of health and environmental problems caused by GMOs and wanted to know how to avoid them. But they were mostly unaware of the large number of GMO products sold by WFM.

In April 2012 GGA and SFA presented WFM the results of a survey they did on attitudes toward food labeling by 315 participants in St. Louis. The poll found that 95% wanted labels on foods containing GMOs. If also showed that WFM customers were the least likely of five groups to be willing to serve GMOs. But, at the same time, they were the most likely to expect food at WFM to be free of GMO contamination.

Safe Food Action sent the April findings to WFM and asked management to contact them by May 14 to discuss the findings and recommendations. When WFM stonewalled them, the safe food advocates called a picket for June 9.

Last month, members of Safe Food Action St. Louis met with the store manager of the Brentwood Whole Foods Market to share the outcome of their survey regarding labeling GMO-contaminated food. The survey was consistent with other surveys conducted across the US, with 96% of the 315 respondents calling for the labeling of GMO food. The survey also showed that the majority folks shopping at Whole Foods Market had no idea that the store carries GMO food at all; many of them were surprised and dismayed at the fact.

Taking a stand for public health and food democracy, Safe Food Action St Louis has strongly urged Whole Foods Market to label foods containing GMOs and requested that Whole Foods Market provide an answer to this request by May 15. As yet, Safe Food Action St. Louis has not received a reply from management at Whole Foods Market. It is now time for Whole Foods Market to hear from us, the consumers!

Please join Safe Food Action St. Louis on Saturday, June 9th, and let Whole Foods Market know how you feel about unlabeled GMOs being sold in their stores.
