On Saturday, July 28, 2012, members of the Atlanta Genetic Crimes Unit and the Food Supply Rescue Coalition descended on the Trader Joe’s store located at 931 Monroe Drive, Atlanta, GA to shop for some truth.
What’s the problem with the beloved Trader Joe’s? While ordinary folks see Trader Joe’s as the cool, trendy place to shop for healthy food, a group of Atlantans are on a mission to dispel this myth in their community. They are the GMO resistance.
Trader Joe’s is guilty of selling Genetically Engineered foods. They do this knowingly and admittedly. Trader Joe’s can not provide proof that their private label foods do not contain GMOs. They have yet to provide reports on “third party testing” they claim to conduct. Trader Joe’s makes no effort to provide a non-GMO shopping list of products for their concerned customers. Trader Joe’s private label brands are not certified organic by the USDA. And that’s how Trader Joe’s operates: two-faced Joe selling two-faced food.
Armed with signs, flyers, cameras, recording devices, livestreaming equipment, Mrs. Food Detective and the truth, the Genetic Crimes Unit (GCU) arrived at Trader Joe’s to declare the pseudo-health food store a Genetic Crime Scene.
Under cover agent “shoppers” demonstrated just how difficult it is to locate non-GMO food choices in a sea of Trader Joe’s Genetically Engineered fake food. After completing their shopping task, “shoppers” moved into different check out lanes, asking that cashiers ring up only the food items that were not Genetically Engineered. As cashiers attempted to “isolate” the Frankenfoods, one eager non-GMO “shopper” shared this truth with the entire store with a MIC CHECK! “I’m a mother. I’m a grandmother. I want you to know that Trader Joe’s sells Genetically Engineered foods so you will know what you are feeding your family.”
As part of the FSRC campaign to raise consumer awareness, the Occupy Monsanto Genetic Crimes Unit (GCU) moved outside to engage shoppers in conversation and distribute literature. Time after time, customers were stunned to hear that the very foods they wish to avoid are lining the store shelves. Ms. Food Detective was on hand to help shoppers distinguish the non-GMO foods from the GMO – a daunting task for the average, uninformed consumer.
As part of FSRC’s “STOP the Monsanto Cash Flow” campaign, agent “shoppers” made a steady flow to the customer service desk to demand returns for items that had been purchased one day earlier. “We vote with our dollar. We will no longer give our money to Trader Joe’s, who is just another pimp for Monsanto,” one shopper explained.
At the end of the three hour protest, FSRC and Occupy Monsanto Genetic Crimes Unit declared “Mission Accomplished.” Consumers were educated, Trader Joe’s was put on notice, and $26.25 was kept from reaching the pockets of Monsanto. FSRC and GCU show no signs of letting up on their mission to spread the truth about the dangers of Genetically Engineered foods. Asked to make a final comment to sum up the day, one top GCU agent put it simply: “Expect Us!”
